ワイキキから車で約10分の場所にある、カイムキタウンは、昔ながらのローカルな雰囲気漂う街です。ユニークで美味しいお店が多く集まるグルメタウンということでも知られています。最近、さらに新しいお店も増え、一層グルメが熱い街になってきてます！このエリアの中で特にお気に入りなのが、ヘルシー志向のロコ達の間でも大人気のTOWN。赤い看板が目印です。
イタリア料理やアジア料理、地中海料理などがミックスされた創作料理が人気の秘訣。“Local first,organic whenever possible, with aloha always. (地元の食材を第一に、できる限りオーガニックのものを使った料理を提供する) ”というのがこのお店のポリシーだそう。メニューは、その日に仕入れた野菜によって変わるので、毎回行くと違った料理を楽しめるところも良いですね！私たちが毎回頼むのは、パスタ系。手打ちのパスタとフレッシュなソースの組み合わせが最高に美味しいんです。
TOWN was opened in 2015 by Ed Kenney who was born and raised in Honolulu. With a strong commitment to farm-to-table cooking, the restaurant offers seasonal locally sourced food. That means, you are eating food that was grown by local farmers and caught by local fishermen. The food is extremely fresh and the menu changes everyday depending on availability of ingredients of the day. We always order a couple plates and share so that we can try variety of food. Our favorite thing is hand cut pasta with beef sugo and orecchiette with sage sauce, but honestly, everything from this restaurant is delicious.
このお店のオーナーである、ホノルル出身のエド・ケニーさんは、昔はパンク好きの相当な不良少年だったそう。そんな彼が、全米最大の食の祭典「The James Beard Foundation」でBest chefのセミファイナリストに選ばれたり、ミシェル・オバマに料理を提供したりするほどの有名シェフになったなんて、映画みたいなサクセスストーリーですよね。さらに彼の勢いはとどまることを知らず、今ではタウンの他に「Kaimuki Superette」や「Mud Hen Water」、そして最近新しくオープンした 「Mahina & Sun’s」まで展開しています。すごいですね！
Today, Kenney runs four restaurants – TOWN, Kaimuki Superette, Mud Hen Water and Mahina & Sun’s. The James Beard Foundation has named him as a semi-finalist for Best Chef in 2013. He has cooked for the former First Lady Michelle Obama. Well, judging from his accomplishment, it’s so easy to tell that he is one of the most successful restauranteurs. However, he had no idea he wanted to be a chef when he was young because he was a bad punk enthusiast who started smoking at age of 15. And now he turned to be a successful restauranteur. Such a success story!
